An official opening of an exhibition of a new international cultural and educational project of the International Centre of the Roerichs: “The Roerich Pact. Peace through Culture” will take place at the Architect House on August, 14th, 2020, St. Petersburg. This year the traditional Autumn Festival in the Himalayan Roerich Estate is dedicated to the 145th Birth Anniversary of Nicholas Roerich and the 115th Birth Anniversary of Svetoslav Roerich. The Festival opened on 5th of October with a creative event for the children and youth. Students of the Helena Roerich Academy of Art for children, IRMT, and other students of the local schools gathered in the morning at the IRMT to take part in the Festival «Russia-India: From Heart to Heart» organised by IRMT and volunteers of the International Centre of the Roerichs, Moscow. On this day respected guests Smt. Sushma Sharma, President of the Naggar Panchayat, Mrs. Natalya Cherkashina, Director of the Non-Governmental Museum named after Nicholas Roerich (ICR, Moscow) and Smt. Lalita Kanwar, Managing Academic Director and Principal of La Montessori School, Kullu, HP, honoured the celebrations with their presence.

International Scientific and Public Conference "Culture and Civilization in the XXI Century in the Light of Nicholas Roerich’s Ideas" took place on June, 30th –July,1st in Scientific-Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg, Russia. The conference was a continuation of previous meetings of the international cultural and scientific community held in Estonia, Finland, Germany and Austria. The Conference organizers were the St. Petersburg Branch of the International Center of the Roerichs (ICR) and the Scientific-Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, under the support of the International Center of the Roerichs, the German Roerich Society, the Estonian Roerich Society, the European Association “EURASIM”, the Latvian Branch of the International Center of the Roerichs, the Austrian Society of the Roerichs – the National Committee of the Roerich Pact. The Information Support of the Conference was by the Information Portal "Museums of Russia" and the Inter-regional Information-Analytical Center (IIAC).

Roerich Culture Festival Continues in the International Roerich Memorial Trust in India

October 9, the day when the world celebrated the 142nd anniversary of Nicholas Roerich, the Maharishi as this Russian artist is reverently called in India, attracted scores of guests and tourists from India, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Greece, the Netherlands and other countries. As per the tradition, the festivities opened with the shanti puja, the traditional prayer for world peace and wellbeing, conducted on the cremation spot of Nicholas Roerich near his Memorial Stone from where one can see the snow-capped twin peaks of Gepang. After the puja, the Russian and Indian national flags and the Banner of Peace were hoisted near the Roerich House in a solemn ceremony symbolizing the lasting friendship and ever strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

This is the first-ever international treaty on the protection of cultural heritage establishing the priority of protection of cultural values over military necessity, signed by representatives of 21 states on April 15, 1935 in Washington.

At the Himalayan Roerich Estate in Naggar there was celebrated the 110th Birth Anniversary of Svetoslav Roerich, the younger son of Nicholas and Helena Roerich. The Indians and Russians united in honoring the artistic and human genius of Svetoslav Roerich gathered around the sacred fire burnt in memory of this prominent artist repeating after a pujari-priest the wonderful words of Shanti-puja – a prayer for peace and good, a prayer of blessing. “Indeed, only peace leads to happiness, gives hope for success and well-being. May this wonderful blessing guide all our doings, all our creative activities and our hopes,” Svetoslav Roerich wrote.

In early July the project was launched in Shimla – the capital of the Himachal Pradesh state; then the exhibition dedicated to the Roerich Pact opened at the Himalaya Roerichs’ estate in Naggar; on 9 September it was received in the Indian city of Chandigarh, the capital of the two states – Penjub and Haryana. The organizer of the exhibit in Chandigarh was, as in Shimla, the Lalit Kala National Academy of Fine Arts, its Punjub center.

On July 7 at 4:00 PM in the Art Gallery in Shimla a solemn inauguration of the exhibition of the International Centre of the Roerichs “The Roerich Pact. History and Modernity” took place. With this event the ICR starts a new stage of an international project that will embrace cities of India. The inauguration of the exhibition traditionally began with “cutting red ribbon” ceremony that was done by the Chief Minister of the State of Himachal Pradesh Mr. Virbhadra Singh and lighting up a lamp (in Hindi djoti tipak) in order to make this cultural event successful. At the inauguration representatives of the Government of Himachal Pradesh, workers of culture, science and art were present.

The opening of the new semester in the Academy of Arts for children named after Helena Roerich

A new semester in the Academy of Arts for children named after Helena Roerich opened in the International Roerich Memorial Trust, in a new spacious house, which belonged some time to Colonel Osborn. The building is situated on a mountain slope, a little bit lower than the Urusvati Institute; one can enjoy a wonderful view of Naggar, the Beas River and the Kullu Valley surrounded by Himalayas. The Osborn House was bought by the Roerich Trust around 10 years ago and was not in use for a long time. This year, it was repaired to admit children to classes of painting, Indian classical dance, music and singing.

On the revocation of banking license of OAO (JSC) Master Bank by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on 20 November 2013, mass media started prosecuting and casting slurs upon its head Boris Ilyich Bulochnik, who for 20 years has been the Maecenas of the public Museum named after N.K. Roerich. The International Roerich Centre hasn't made any official statements on this issue yet, because the developments were quick and sudden and it takes some time to analyze and think them over. Before long the ICR will make an official statement on the case.

The exhibition shows rare photos and documents about Mahatma Gandhi’s life and depicts the most important events which made M.Gandhi a leader of the national Indian movement for independence. Helena V.Kucheryavenko, a lector of the St.Petersburg Branch of the Internationl Center of the Roerichs, has made a lecture with a video-presentation about M.Gandhi’s childhood, his studies in England, his solicitor work in Africa, his correspondence with Leo Tolstoy, which influenced greatly on his philosophy and Satyāgraha movement.

"Rabindranath Tagore – Indian Culture Messenger" lecture was readin a district library in St.Petersburg, Russia. The lecture is within the "R.Tagore – Indian Culture Messenger" exhibition, which has been made by the St.Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs through support of the Consulate General of India in St.Petersburg.
Tatyana Aleksandrova, a SPB ICR lecturer, presented the lecture which was followed with a video-presentation showing photos and documents about life and creative work of the greatest son of India Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Prize laureate, a poet and playwright, a composer and an artist, an outstanding public figure brought Indian Culture to the West in the XX century. Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry, music and cultural work greatly influenced the Indian fight for independence and contributed to revival of the national spirit of India.
The audience heartedly greeted the story about one of the greatest Indian outstanding figures.

March, 14, 2012, a lecture about Roerich’s painting “Saint Serguis, the Builder” (1924), from the “Banners of the East” series, took place in the Russian National Library lecture hall in St.Petersburg, Russia. The lecture was presented by Tomsha E.A., the chairman of the St.Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs.
Saint Serguis of Radonezh’s image is a part of the Russian people consciousness; and up to the present Saint Serguis is taken by the Russian people as the teacher, the father and the inspirer. He is the spiritual Guide, “the fair judge, the healer of spiritual and bodily feebleness and the defender from enemies of all kinds”.

The third lecture of the cycle was held in the Lecture Hall of the Russian National Public Library on February, 12, 2012. The meeting was dedicated to 133 birth anniversary of Helena Roerich, a philosopher and thinker; her birthday is annually celebrated on February, 12.
The lecture theme was: “Musical Art in Life and Creative Work of Helena Roerich”. The lecture was presented by E.A.Tomsha, the chairman of the St.Petersburg Branch of the ICR, a member of the Russian Union of Concert Workers. He spoke about unknown pages of Helena Roerich’s life connected with music. E.A.Tomsha mentioned influence of musical art on formation of a harmoniously developed man and spoke about musical knowledge basis from the Living Ethics’ point of view.

January, 13th, 2012 the Russian Imperial Public Library celebrated the 198th anniversary. Several festive events were devoted to the anniversary: a scientific conference - “N.N. Figner’s Archive: new acquisitions of the IPL” - was held in the conference hall of the main building of the IPL; a unique exhibition “Talent Wins Time: Some Materials from N.N.Figner’s Archive” was held in the Manuscripts section of the IPL. There were exhibited letters, diaries, photographs of the musician. In the Korf’s hall of the IPL there opened an exhibition “Literature about Russia, published abroad. New acquisitions”.

An International academic and cultural center will be founded in Southern India

The Roerich family estate Tatgunni, located near Bangalore in the state of Karnataka in South West India, will be turned into an international academic and cultural center. As Mr Kadakin, Ambassador of Russia in India, told ITAR TASS, it was made possible by a ruling of the Supreme Court of India, which took the decision on the ownership of the Estate land. According to the court decision the Tatgunni Estate will be passed under the control of Karnataka state government.

Year of Italy in Russia: Lecture Devoted to Leonardo da Vinchi

In the Year of Italy in Russia, on April, 22nd, 2011 in the Library of History and Culture of St. Petersburg (72,Marata St.), (lecture centre of the St. Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs) there was a lecture devoted to Leonardo da Vinchi – a unique genius in the history of mankind. A video presentation about Leonardo da Vinch was made by Helena Yu. Tomsha, head of Scientific Research Section of the St. Petersburg Branch of the ICR. Leonardo da Vinchi made foundations for modern sciences: botany, anatomy, geology, biology, physics, mechanics, astronomy, art and architecture. Though his work and inventions were embodied only several centuries later… The audience also saw extracts from a feature film “La Vita di Leonardo Da Vinci” (1971), “Gold Globe” award in 1973, an Italian director Renato Kastellani. The lecture was held by Eduard Tomsha, the chairman of the St. Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs.

Janusz Korczak: Teacher, Writer, Doctor and Public Figure

March, 25th, in the Library of History and Culture of St. Petersburg (72, Marata St.), (lecture hall of the St. Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs) there was a lecture devoted to Janusz Korczak. “There are no children, there are people with different knowledge, different experience, different inspirations and different game of feelings”, these are the words of Janusz Korczak, a teacher and a humanist; welfare of his students and respect of a child’s personality were the highest for him. “How to Love a Child” and “The Child's Right to Respect” are the main books of Korczak, the writer.
Natalya N. Salnis , a musical expert, a Russian Union of Composers member, a translator of many Janusz Korczak’s works into Russian told the audience about his life, activities, his great love to children and his self-sacrifice.

Touches to the Portrait” – this was a name of a regular meeting of the lecture centre of the St. Petersburg Branch of the ICR that was held on February, 25th, 2011 in the Library of History and Culture of St. Petersburg (72, Marata St.). The lecture was devoted to life and creative work of an outstanding compatriot, philosopher and thinker, writer and translator – to Helena Roerich; her birth day is celebrated on February, 12th.
Collaborators of St. Petersburg Branch of the ICR made reports, each was about a different facet of Helena Roerich’s life and creative work. This made it possible for the public to grasp width and depth of Helena Roerich’s knowledge, to realize the value and amount of work that this amazing woman managed to accomplish in one life.

In the Year of France in Russia on December, 24th, 2010 in the Lecture Center of the St. Petersburg Branch of the ICR (in the Library of History and Culture of St. Petersburg, 72 Marata St.) there was a lecture with video presentation on the theme: “Cathars”, made by H.Yu.Tomsha.
Saint Love Religion”, “apostolic Christianity”, “teaching of the perfect”…. These were the names for the cathars’ belief, which was spread in Europe in XII century; it went from Slavic lands to Provance and Languedoc region of Southern France. From the past their deep understanding of honest belief, love and aspiration to true freedom reached us today. Remembering tragic history of the Cathars the present world bows down before their courage, determination and strength of their spirit. |

“The Realm of Roerich” exhibition opened on November, 28th in the Chekov library, St.Petersburg, Russia, shows reproductions of the Roerich’s paintings. The exhibition was opened with a video lecture about life and creative work of Nicholas Roerich, the lecture was presented by Kucheryavenko Yelena, a lecturer of the St.Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs. The lecturer spoke on various facets of creative work of the famous artist and answered the visitors questions. The exhibition shows also books published by the International Centre of the Roerichs, the books one can read in the library during the exhibition till January, 2011.

Year of France in Russia: on November, 19, 2010 in the Library of History and Culture of St.Petersburg (72, Marata St., St.Petersburg, RF) there was a meeting of the Lecture Centre of the St. Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs . The meeting was devoted to impressionism in world art. E.A.Tomsha, Chairman of the SPB of the ICR, held a lecture about the impressionism origin, artists and musicians – impressionists, who gave bright impulse to the world culture. After the lecture there was shown a film about Oscar-Claude Monet (Great Britain production); the film helped to understand impressionism itself and to know more about life of the famous artist.

On October, 29th, 2010 in the Library of History and Culture of St.Petersburg (72 Marata St., St.Petersburg, RF) there was a meeting of the Lecture Centre of the SPBranch of the ICR. E.A.Tomsha, Chairman of the SPBranch of the ICR made a lecture about the Roerich Pact: “St.Petersburg Origins of the Roerich Pact”. The idea of protecting cultural heritage was initiated by Nicholas Roerich in the end of XIX century; E.A.Tomsha described how the idea developed before 1917. The speech was followed with a video-presentation which showed photo documents of the ICR archives and other sources.
The meeting finished with showing of Valeriy Shatin’s film about the Roerich Pact -“Time to Gather Stones”.
