The “Roerich Pact. History and Modernity” exhibition was held in the Russian National Library, St.Petersbrug

The International exhibition project the “Roerich Pact. History and Modernity” held in the Russian National Library from September, 25 to October 18, was a great success.

The organizers were: the International Center of the Roerichs (Moscow), the International Committee for Protection  of the Roerichs’ Heritage, the Russian National Library, St.Petersburg Branch of the ICR, with support of St.Petersburg Foreign Relations Committee, General Consulate of Belgium in St.Petersburg, General Consulate of Switzerland in St.Petersburg, General Consulate of India in St.Petersburg and “Izvara” Museum-Estate of N.Roerich.

The International exhibition project is dated to 80th anniversary of signing the International Treaty for protection of artistic, scientific and historical monuments (The Roerich Pact) to be celebrated in 2015. The international Project started in 2012 in Jeneva. Since then the Project traveled through France, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and India. Since February, 2014, the exhibition travels through Russia.  St.Petersburg was the 41st city in RF to house the exhibition.

The exhibited materials, documents, books depicting spiritual deeds and protection of culture were from the achives of the International Center of the Roerichs and of the Russian National Library.

 The exhibition was an important cultural event in St.Petersburg in the Year of Culture in Russia and in the Jubilee Year of the Roerichs, said people in the visitors’ book. More than 900 people: school children, teachers, college and lyceum students, military and naval cadets of St.Petersburg and Leningrad Region, citizens and guests of St.Petersburg visited the exhibition. Lecturers of the St.Petersburg Branch of the ICR held excursions; theme films were shown.

The exhibition depicts history of the Roerich’s idea of protection of cultural treasures starting from its origin to its realization in the Treaty for protection of cultural and historical monuments known later as the Roerich Pact. The idea is still urgent nowadays.

“By widening of culture space we will manage to decrease wars and armed conflicts. Where culture there is is peace. There is a heroic deed and right decision of the most difficult social problems”, said Nicholas Roerich. The“Roerich Pact. History and Modernity” exhibition stresses the necessity to unite the world community efforts for protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of the mankind.
