January, 13th, 2012 the Russian Imperial Public Library celebrated its 198th anniversary. Several festive events were devoted to the anniversary: a scientific conference “N.N. Figner’s Archive: new acquisitions of the IPL” was held in the conference hall of the main building of the Russian Public Library; a unique exhibition  “Talent Wins Time: Materials from N.N.Figner’s Archive” was held in the Manuscripts section of the RPL. There were exhibited letters, diaries, photographs of the musician. In the Korf’s hall of the IPL there opened an exhibition “Literature about Russia Published Abroad. New Acquisitions”.

Meeting of friends, celebrations of the library grantors and awarding with prizes and diplomas took place in the new building of the Russian National Library (165, Moskovsky prospect, St.Petersburg). There were opened new exhibitions: “International book exchange of the RNL, 2011” and “Digest. Main Events of the RNL, 2011” (photographs of Urshula-Helena Kuzma, the RNL photographer).

Special interest was given to the exhibition  “Granted for the Common Good”: gifts to the Russian National Library, 2011”. This is an annual exhibition showing the most precious publications and documents, which were presented to the Library during the last year. This year there were exhibited albums, catalogues, books of the State Hermitage, the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin House, different publishing houses of St.Petersburg and foreign countries. There was also exhibited books published by the International Centre of the Roerichs, in 5 volumes; and “Culture and Time” journal, Nos.1, 2 and 3, 2011. All books and journals were presented  as a gift to the RNL in  two copies for convenience of the readers of the Library.

It became a good tradition to present books published by the International Centre of the Roerichs as a gift to the Russian National Library. This year the RNL funds were enriched with  the “Works of the Joint Research Center of Problems of Cosmic Mind” in 2 volumes, a collection of Ludmila V.Shaposhnikova works:  “Cosmic evolution  in light of cultural heritage of the Roerichs”; “The Roerichs’ heritage needs protection”.

The Russian National Library is known all over the world and it is among the most honored world libraries thanks to its history, unique collections of manuscripts and printed documents in all world languages. Its richest funds and intellectual potential are available to a wide number of readers. As all other biggest world libraries the RNL aims to develop, preserve and reveal its unique resources most usefully for the public.
