On May 10, 2015 the UNESCO Director-General Mrs. Irina Bokova, during her stay in Moscow at the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, paid a visit to the non-governmental Museum named after Nicholas Roerich of the International Centre of the Roerichs. Mrs. Bokova’s visit was a tribute to Nicholas Roerich – an outstanding figure of Russian and world culture, who conceived and offered the Roerich Pact to humanity – the first comprehensive international treaty aimed at protecting the cultural heritage of mankind.

During the visit Mrs Bokova was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to UNESCO Eleonora Mitrofanova and Executive Secretary of the Russian Federation Commission for UNESCO G.E.Ordzhonikidze. Having got acquainted with the exposition of the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich, the UNESCO Director General noted down the following message in the guest book of the Museum: "I have visited the Roerich Museum with great excitement. The Roerich Pact, signed back in 1935, became the basis of the International Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of armed conflict, which UNESCO appreciates. This wisdom and humanism of Nicholas Roerich continues to inspire us!".

Irina Bokova expressed her admiration for the wonderful non-governmental Museum to its Director-General, the first vice-president of the ICR Lyudmila Shaposhnikova. During the meeting the ways of further cooperation between UNESCO and Nicholas Roerich Museum in popularization of the Roerich Pact and its fundamental principle "Peace through Culture" were outlined. At the end of the meeting Madam L.V.Shaposhnikova presented the distinctive flag of the Roerich Pact – the "Banner of Peace" and some of the ICR publications to the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
