Indian Artist Surjit Akre’s Exhibition took place in Museum-apartment of I.I. Brodsky on November, 17-28th, St.Petersburg, RF.
Surjit Akre is the first Indian graduate of I.Repin Institute of Art, Sculpture and Architecture, St.Petersburg. She is well-known in India as a portrait and landscape painter. Since 1985 she had 50 exhibitions of her works and took part in a number of joint exhibitions. The artist’s works are in museums and private collections of India and abroad.
Creative work of the artist is romantic, academic features mix with Indian folk art. She depicts a woman, woman’s inner world, her wishes and aspirations. All woman images on Surjit Akre’s paintings are full of inner beauty, including young girls charming with their inner beauty and a woman- mother, wise with life experience, - all of them are full with extraordinary light and inner harmony.
The show exhibits include works which depict everyday life of Indian people, who are beautifully painted in folk costumes and cast a spell over the spectators with bright colors.
Among the numerous visitors of the exhibition there were children from Volosovo Children’s Art School by name of N.K.Roerich, Leningradskaya Oblast (Leningrad Region). Art students of different forms listened with great interest to Surjit Akre’s story about her paintings and were sincerely delighted with Surjit Akre’s bright colors so strange for the northern nature. The children also showed interest to the paintings depicting ancient Indian mythology gods such as Sarasvati - a goddess of Knowledge and Teaching, Krishna – one of God’s forms in Hinduism. The Indian Artist’s creative work opened a new facet of the world art to children, they got acquainted with the culture of India, its nature and folk life.
Surjit Akre is a president of Art Club by the name of the Roerichs of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in New Delhi. Since 1998 she has organized about 200 exhibits of Russian and Indian painters. In 2009 Surjit Akre got a State Award of RF – “Pushkin Medal” – for strengthening of Russian-Indian friendship.
