Jubilee Presentation of "Culture and Time" Journal and L.Shaposhnikova Exhibition "On the Master’s Route" in Nabokov Museum, St.Petersburg








Jubilee Presentation of "Culture and Time" Journal and L.Shaposhnikova Exhibition "On the Master’s Route" took place on December, 21st , 2011 in Nabokov museum (the museum is a division of the St. Petersburg State University Faculty of Philology and Arts). The presentation was devoted to the 10th anniversary of the public, social and artistic journal “Culture and Time”. The presentation was followed by opening of L.Shaposhnikova exhibition “On the Master’s Route”.

The exhibition shows photographs taken by Lydmila V. Shaposhnikova, who is chief-editor of “Culture and Time” journal, Director General of the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich, a world-known scientist, Jawaharlal Nehru Award laureate, academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the K.E.Tsiolkovskiy Russian Academy of Cosmonautics, honored art worker.

The celebration was organized by Nabokov museum, editorial staff of “Culture and Time” journal of the International Centre of the Roerichs (ICR) and by the St.Petersburg Branch of the ICR.

Tatyana Ponomaryova, the Nabokov museum director, Galina Smolenskaya, art-director of “Culture and Time” journal, Eduard Tomsha, chairman of the St.Petersburg Branch of the ICR, Lev Borkin, chairman of Board of St.Petersburg Union of Scientists spoke at the festive event.

Mr.Gandhi, Consul General of India in St.Petersburg, congratulated the art-director of the journal with the jubilee and said that long-term fruitful cooperation of the Consulate General of India in St.Petersburg with the St.Petersburg Branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs in various projects is depicted in the “Culture and Time” journal, which is beautifully illustrated and informative.

The International Centre of the Roerichs, founder and publisher of the journal, published the first issue of “Culture and Time” journal 10 years ago, in 2001. During the period the journal presented to its readers new achievements of science and art, unique artistic work, cultural traditions of East and West. Today the journal reveals the deepest content of the concept of Culture and shows its surprising and striking facets. The journal is published four times a year. Each issue has the most interesting material about Russian and world culture, articles on creative work of the most outstanding thinkers, articles on rich heritage of Nicholas and Helena Roerich, and their talented sons: Yuri and Svyatoslav. Subject of Beauty was the central one in the creative work of the famous Family. Dostoyevsky’s prophetic words “Beauty will save the world” became the motto of “Culture and Time" journal. The journal was awarded with the order “Gold Fund of the Press – 2008” and was recommended to Russian libraries to acquire.

The presentation of “Culture and Time” journal was followed by opening of the exhibition of artistic photographs taken by L.Shaposhnikova – “Along the Master’s Route”. The unique exhibition was opened in the big hall of Nabokov museum. There are exhibited photos of the places connected with the route of the Central Asian Expedition of Nicholas Roerich (1923-1928), which were taken by Lydmila Shaposhnikova in 1970s during her scientific research work in Altai, Mongolia, Tibet and India. L.V.Shaposhnikova’s photos give an opportunity for the spectators to become witnesses of the route done by Nicholas Roerich during his research of common sources of Culture which unite East and West.

In honor of the jubilee presentation and of the opening of the exhibition there was a performance of “Joy of Life”, a folk ensemble. The ensemble is laureate of international contests of Indian dances, of folk art contests, of youth festivals of national cultures; Natalya Antonova is its head manager. The Indian dances gave national coloring to the jubilee event and reminded the guests about national traditions of diverse Indian culture.
