13.11.2011 Exhibition of Documentary Photographs “R.Tagore – Indian Culture Messenger” devoted to 150th anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore

On November, 13th , 2011 Prokofyev Library in St.Petersburg, Russia (Ul.Dimitrov, 9\1,St.Petersburg, Russia) hosted the exhibition of documentary photographs  "R.Tagore – Indian Culture Messenger". 

The exhibition  is devoted to 150th anniversary of the greatest son of India Rabindranath  Tagore. It was opened by Nikolayeva Galina, the head of the library, who noted good cooperation of the library with St.Petersburg Department of the International Center of the Roerichs (the SPB ICR), the creator of the exhibition. Galina Nikolayaeva  heartly greeted the head of the Bangladesh Center of Culture, Science and Information, Mr.Zahid Ahmed and his secretary, Dr.Uddin Salah Sezad, present at the event. Elena Korchemkina  as a member of the SPB ICR also greeted the Bangladesh Center representatives and noted possible future cooperation of the societies.

Elena Kucheryavenko, a SPB ICR lecturer told the public about life and creative work of R.Tagore, a great public figure, a poet, a musician and a cultural worker. The lecturer recited Tagore’s poems in Russian translation, described his life showing a video-presentation and the exhibited photos. She also stressed Tagore’s contribution to education and  development of  Bengali as a literary language.

Mr.Zahid Ahmed, the head of the Bangladesh Center of Culture, Science and Information, thanked the public and the organizers of the exhibition for the event devoted to the 150th anniversary of R.Tagore, the great son of India. Mr.Zahid Ahmed described modern life of Bangladesh, work of the Bangladesh Center in St.Petersbrug. He colourfully depicted  several events held by the Center in St.Petersburg every year. Mr.Zahid Ahmed and his secretary, Mr. Uddin Salah Sezad sang the Bangladesh anthem; R.Tagore, who devoted all his life to national independence and revival of the national language and culture, was the author of the anthem.

Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry, music and cultural work greatly influenced the Indian fight for independence and contributed to revival of the national spirit of India.  Tagore’s creative activities strengthened the Indian-Russian cultural relationship.
