The "R. Tagore – Indian Сulture Messenger" exhibition was opened in the Prokofiev library, St. Petersburg, Russia








Presentation of "Rabindranath Tagore - Indian Culture Messenger" exhibition - a joint project of Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg and St. Petersburg Branch of the International Center of the Roerichs – took place in the gymnasium No.284, Kirovsky district, St.Petersburg, Russia, on 18,November, 2018.

Life and creative work of a world-known poet, an artist, a teacher and a philosopher, an Indian great cultural and public figure - Rabindranath Tagore – was described for school children by Yelena Kucheryavenko, St.Petersburg Branch ICR lecturer.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941) – a Nobel laureate, a world famous poet of India, a writer and a playwright, a composer and a painter, a prominent international public figure, an educator and aphilosopher, a humanist. Rabindranath Tagore was one of those artists, who opened the East to the world; his lectures and speeches sounded in many countries of the world, including the USSR, where Rabindranath Tagore was in the 30-ies of the last century.

Soul of his beautiful and suffering homeland sang in Tagore’s creative works. The creative heritage of the genius son of India is huge: there are more than two thousands of lyrical poems and songs, hundreds of ballads and poems, eight novels, eleven collections of short stories, more than twenty plays, articles on literary, social and philosophical problems, speeches and performances. Tagore’s Songs are so unique, they are known as "Rabindra Sangeet" (songs of Rabindranath). In the last twelve years of his life  he was fond of painting and graphics and created about two thousand paintings. Exhibitions of his paintings were held with great success in many countries.

The activity of R. Tagore in enlightening India is difficult to overestimate. He considered his primary means to renew and educate the society and revive Indian culture. As a teacher, Rabindranath Tagore laid emphasis on the idea of a universal and complete education, and he founded the "Patha Bhavan" school in Shantiniketan. In 1918, Rabindranath Tagore created "Visva-Bharati" University in Shantiniketan to make it a place where "Mirage of geographical boundaries disappear at least in one place in India".

The lecturer told the gymnasium students about poems of the great poet of India, about his thoughts on pedagogy, national language and culture of the peoples of India and the world.
