“Prominent Thinkers and Heroes of India” – the Fifth Philosophical Readings devoted to Year of India in Russia - held by the SPBranch of the International Centre of the Roerichs, in the Children Library of History and Culture, St.Petersburg, RF. This year the Readings were devoted to Year of India in Russia. Our countries are united with ancient cultural, scientific and economic connections. Interest to India grows fast. Deep spiritual culture of India and Russia is the bridge connecting two countries. The Readings were devoted to great thinkers and devotees of India of XIX-XX centuries to attract people’s attention to their philosophical ideas which are treasures of humanity.
Vasyukova Mira L., head of the Library greeted the readings participants and stressed that the library and the SPBranch of the ICR cooperate fruitfully and long. She showed to the visitor a gift recently donated to the library: a miniature edition of the Indian Hymn in different languages.
Tsaytsev I.Yu., member of St.-Petersburg Board of Ramakrishna Mission told about the Ramakrishna Mission work in the modern world. He spoke about Ramakrishna’s biography and his spiritual deed. Ramakrishna studied practically all world religions: Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and with his life supported the theory saying that all religions are united and go from the common source. His spiritual follower Swami Vivekananda founded Ramakrishna’s Mission whose monks support his ideas in India and all over the world.
М. Tchiryatiev , vice-president of the International League for Protection of Culture, RANS councilor, member of St.-Petersburg Board of the International Centre of the Roerichs, told about bright personality of Swami Vivekananda.
“Mohandas Gandhi - Spiritual Leader” – this was the name of report done by Avotina M.P. , candidate of physics and mathematics, member of St.-Petersburg Department of the International Centre of the Roerichs.
“Rabindranath Tagore. Contemporaries to descendants”. Korzenkova M.I., member of St.-Petersburg Department Board of the International Centre of the Roerichs, described bright life of the Indian poet and philosopher and public figure.
Tomsha E.A., member of St.-Petersburg Department Board of the International Centre of the Roerichs, told the visitors about Jawaharlal Nehru, thinker and philosopher and famous political leader of India. Jawaharlal Nehru studied both: ancient Indian philosophy and Western Renaissance thinkers works, philosophical systems of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, of Mahatma Gandhi and R.Tagore. Their cultural heritage helped Jawaharlal Nehru solve the most difficult task of reconciliation of religious and political contradictions inside India.
The Readings themes awoke more interest to great thinkers of India and their philosophical heritage in the participants.
