The Roerich Pact: the past and the present






Five days to discover the career and the commitment to peace and protection of cultural heritage of Nicolas Konstantinovitch Roerich (1874 -1947), Russian humanist, painter, writer, archaeologist.


This exhibition, organized by the International Centre of the Roerichs (ICR), traces the life of Nicolas Roerich, his commitment through the history of the Roerich Pact and Banner of Peace, and twenty years activity of the Center dedicated to the promotion of the Pact.

The inauguration of the exhibition is scheduled at 6 p.m., 2nd April and will be followed by the ‘The Tree of Life’ International Prize awards ceremony. The 2012 winners are:
- Ms L. Shaposhnikova, Director-General of the Roerich Museum
- H.E. Mr. B. Boutros-Ghali, the President of the International Panel on Democracy and Development, former Secretary-General of the United Nations,
- H.E. Dr. K. Singh, President of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations,
- H.E. Mr. Ch. Aznavour, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Armenia to UNESCO

Peintre prolifique, il est l’auteur de quelque sept mille toiles empreintes de ses voyages (Russie, Europe du Nord, États-Unis et Inde), de sa quête de spiritualité et de son amour pour la nature, la paix et la culture.

Outre sa carrière artistique, Nicolas Konstantinovitch Roerich est l’artisant du Traité pour la protection des institutions artistiques et scientifiques et des monuments historiques, connu sous le nom de « Pacte Roerich », qui marque l’aboutissement de son engagement en faveur de protection du patrimoine culturel.

Le traité, signé à Washington en 1935, prévoit dans son article premier que « les monuments historiques, les musées, les institutions dédiées aux sciences, aux arts, à l'éducation, et à la culture seront considérés comme neutres, et comme tels seront respectés et protégés par les belligérants. […]». Et l’article III spécifie : « pour désigner les monuments et institutions mentionnés à l'article premier, on pourra se servir d'un drapeau distinctif conforme au modèle annexé au présent traité (un cercle rouge renfermant une triple sphère, le tout sur fond blanc). » Il s’agit là de la Bannière de la Paix, conçue comme symbole de protection de la culture et des biens culturels, à l’instar de la croix rouge qui symbolisait la protection des hôpitaux.

Après la Seconde guerre mondiale, le Pacte Roerich, toujours en vigueur, sera complété par Convention pour la protection des biens culturels en cas de conflit armé de la Haye de 1954.

Cette exposition, réalisée par le Centre international des Roerich (International Centre of the Roerichs, ICR), retrace la vie de Nicolas Roerich, son engagement à travers l’histoire du Pacte Roerich et celle de la Bannière de la Paix, ainsi que vingt années d’activités du Centre dédié à la promotion du Pacte.
